Obituary for Nels Rasmussen

2/18/1918 – 11/21/2013
Nels P. Rasmussen, age 95 of Sidney, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 21, 2013 with his family and caregivers by his side. He was born, in the same house he passed in, on February 18, 1918, the son of Danish immigrants, Rasmus & Marie (Anderson) Rasmussen and the house has remained the Rasmussen home all his life.
Nels met his future wife, Pearl Hodges at a birthday party. After a short courtship, they were married on September 24, 1937 and celebrated 75 years of marriage before her death in January of this year. Together they worked on the farm and raised their family of four children. Nels especially loved his family and looked forward to all the occasions they would be together. He was always very appreciative of anything anyone did for him and one always received a thank you and a “bless you” for their deed no matter how small.
Nels is survived by his daughter, Joyce & Tom Fritz of Sidney, three sons, Don & Kathy Rasmussen of Stanton, Dale & Chris Rasmussen of Sidney, Jack Rasmussen & Linda Matthews of Fargo, N. Dakota, 8 grandchildren, Rick Fritz & Elena Tabares, Brad & Pascale Fritz, Tracey Fritz, all of Sidney, Erik & Amy Rasmussen of Grand Haven, Doug Rasmussen of Lansing, Claire Rasmussen of Bozeman, Montana, Kial-Ann Rasmussen of Madison, Wisconsin and Leslie Rasmussen of Fargo, N. Dakota and step grandchildren, Amy & Jason Day of Sheridan and Jennifer Kosten of Grand Rapids, 16 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Alma Damaska of Stanton, a niece, Barbara & Larry Parker, a nephew, Roger & Carol Damaska, grand nieces and nephews and many friends.
In addition to his wife, Nels was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, sisters, brother-in-law, Mike Damaska, nephew, John Damaska and infant twin great granddaughters, Taylor & Emily Fritz.
As it was for many in those early years, life was a struggle. His father died when Nels was eleven months old and life became even more difficult for the family. As he got older, it became necessary for him to quit school in the 8th grade to help out on the farm so they would not lose it; he worked hard and they kept the farm. During those years, he also found time to have fun with his friends. We’ve all heard many stories of his childhood pranks such as tipping over outhouses; one can only hope no one was in them at the time.
On Saturday nights in the late forties and early fifties, Nels played the fiddle in a band for round and square dances in the community. A special memory is from a recent Christmas when he played his old fiddle once again. His fingers were a little stiff, but he could still play a tune.
He enjoyed flowers, dogs, listening to traditional country and western music, socializing, telling stories, hunting and fishing. For many years, he went “up north” to hunt deer with his friends. He was the last surviving member of that group. It was not unusual for him to stay in his hunting shack the entire day, eating sandwiches and soup warmed on his heating stove.
Nels retired from Gibson’s / Electrolux in 1980 after 32 years of dedicated service. He served in a management position and was past president of the Management Association. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Danish Brotherhood Society.
