Mitch Newton
November 24, 1955 — May 16, 2019
On Thursday, May 16th, 2019 Mitchell Newton passed away in the loving presence of his family at his home in Stanton. His wife, Margaret, his daughters Maia Surdam and Marsha Johnson, his sister-in-law Linda Weekly, and his dedicated dog Sadie supported him as he made this peaceful transition.
Mitch and Margaret were married for nearly 38 years and their relationship formed the bedrock of their lives together as caring partners and best friends. As a father, Mitch offered his daughters his consistent presence, his reassuring ear, and an unfaltering love. As a grandfather, Papa Mitch experienced joy and pride in the love he had for his two grandkids, Emmet and Gretchen. In 2012 Mitch received a double lung transplant, a procedure that enabled him to live 7 more years. Through that process, and ever since, Mitch and Margaret have been supported by an incredible network of family, friends and community members whose kindness bolstered their spirits during dark days. Mitch's health battles were plenty, but they do not define his life. Mitch loved being outdoors, whether hunting deer, watching hummingbirds at the feeder, or walking quietly through the woods. He loved to fish, cook food (ribs were his specialty), and work with his hands.
Mitch was born in Lansing on November 24, 1955 but grew up in Sidney on a farm once owned by his great-grandmother. He lived there with his parents John and Shirley Newton, and his brother William. Mitch will be missed by many who knew and loved him. His wife Margaret lives at their longtime home in Stanton. His daughter Maia Surdam lives in Asheville, NC, with her partner Dave Gilbert. His daughter Marsha Johnson resides in Summerville, SC, with her husband Jon, and their children Emmet and Gretchen. His brother Bill Newton lives in Florida with his wife Brenda, and their children Felix, Olivia and Jonathon. Mitch has one remaining aunt and uncle, Shirley and Bob Vining who live in southern Michigan. Mitch's family would like to thank everyone in this supportive community who has offered their love, care, and friendship to them during this difficult time.
A celebration of Mitch’s life is being planned for a later date.
