Lawrence (Shorty) Hansen

June 1, 1924 — February 5, 2019

Lawrence "C" (Shorty) Hansen, age 94 of Stanton, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, February 05, 2019, at his residence, after a brief battle with cancer.

Shorty was born in Montcalm County and was one of fourteen children born to Henry and Ada (Zimmerman) Hansen. Shorty attended Stanton High School and enlisted in the United States Navy prior to completion of his senior year. He served from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre during World War II aboard the USS Sheridan APA 51 as a radio/radar operator. Upon receiving his Honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to the Stanton area, completed his High School Education, drove school bus, was an assistant football coach for Stanton High, and drove truck for Dyer Construction. In 1948 he met and married the love his life, Marjorie (Waldron), daughter of Harvey E. and Thelma Waldron of Crystal, MI. Shorty and Marge were married for 70 plus years. Shorty was employed by General Electric Corporation and subsequently Hitachi Corporation of Edmore from 1952 to 1986. Shorty enjoyed gardening, mushrooming, camping, square dancing, wintering in Florida and spending time with his extended families and friends.

Shorty is survived by his wife Marjorie, his son Allen (Sandy) Hansen of Petoskey, daughters Debra Kolar of Elk Rapids, Jenean (Dean) Whitmore of Carson City, sons- in-law James Kolar of Castle Rock, Colorado, Patrick (Kristy) Wilcox of Elk Rapids, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Betty Garrow of Grand Rapids, brother Gordon (Vivian) Hansen of Stanton, sisters-in-law Priscilla Hansen of Greenville, Betty Hansen of Mt. Pleasant, Ellen Hansen of Grand Blanc, Alida Hansen of Opelousas, Louisiana, Iva Waldron of Crystal, Lois (Steve) Johnston of Vestaburg, Carolyn (Dick) Fitzpatrick of Crystal, brothers-in-law Eldon Waldron of Owensboro, Kentucky, George (Colleen) Waldron of Vestaburg, Harvey (Helen) Waldron of Crystal, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Ada Hansen; daughter Krista Wilcox, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harvey E. and Thelma Waldron, sisters Katheryn (Dale) Beardslee, Esther (Harold) Olsen, Martha (James) Sebring, Mary (Howard) Tiffany, Janice (Raymond) Wilson, brothers David Hansen, Alvin Hansen, Bob (Dorothy) Hansen, Leroy Hansen, Sherman Hansen, Larry Hansen, and brothers-in law Wendell Waldron and Leonard Garrow.

Visitation and funeral services for Shorty are being held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at the Stanton Congregational Church (305 N. Camburn Street). Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM and funeral services will begin at 2 PM with Pastor Jamey Nichols officiating. Final interment will be at McBride Cemetery.

For those wishing to make a memorial donation in Shorty’s memory the family suggests donations be directed to either the Sheridan VFW Post 5065 or Lack’s Cancer Center. Envelopes will be available at the church on Friday.
