John Lawrence Kronkowski

April 13, 1940 — December 24, 2022

John L. Kronkowski, age 82, of Stanton passed away at his home on Saturday, December 24, 2022, with his family by his side and under the care of Spectrum Hospice

John was born on April 13, 1940 at the family farm on rural route 1 in Iverness Twp. in Cheboygan, MI to John and Valeria (Robydek) Kronkowski.

The youngest of six children, he attended St. Charles one room schoolhouse, and later on recounted “walking barefoot, uphill, both ways, while carrying his baby sister on his shoulders, in six feet of snow.”

John grew up working the fields of the family farm and raising animals. He passed his love for the country living onto his own family, raising his kids on a hobby farm. He graduated high school and attended Alpena Jr. College, graduating with an Associates in Science. After leaving Central Michigan College, he returned to the family farm in Cheboygan. Not one to idle, John enlisted in the National Guard where he served for the next 20 years, retiring in 1983. He reenlisted in the Reserves for another 9 years; his only call to duty being the Detroit riots in 1967. Finally, he retired in 1993, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following a prospective job offer, he moved to Stanton to work as a social worker in an office with 6 other people. John loved the people of Stanton, specifically the way he felt welcomed with open arms. The embrace of small-town life reminded him of Cheboygan, including finding a church family within the walls of St. Bernadette's parish.

In 1969, he met the love of his life, Susan Carter. After meeting a few times, he took her number, anticipating taking her friend to a military ball. The friend canceled, resulting in Susan borrowing a dress from her mother to attend in her place.

On May 8, 1971, John married Susan at St. Bernadettes and together they raised four bratty kids. John later retired from social services after 32 years, eight months, and 14 days in 2002. Filling his time having coffee with the boys at McDonald's, coffee and cookies with the guys at Knights, involving himself with his church and monthly luncheons with former colleagues. Soon bored, John was back working for the Montcalm County courts for another nine years.

John was a firm believer in “waste not, want not. After all, children are starving in China.” He rarely turned down a bargain and was frequently seen at auctions, yard sales, flea markets, and tractor and gun shows. Saving the best for last, he would look at guns and be giddy with excitement at a new purchase.

John is survived by his bratty kids, Barb (Michael) Kosten of Fenwick, Jean Kronkowski of Stanton, Francis (Carson) Krabbe of Seattle, Washington, and Mike Kronkowski (Kailey Tobias) of Phoenix, Arizona; his bratty grandchildren whom he loved very much: Kristina Kosten of Fenwick, Kaila Kosten of Grand Rapids, Tim Kosten of Fenwick, Rayne Kronkowski (Tyler Allen) of Grand Rapids, Elora Kronkowski (Sonaldi Mendez) of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Tristen Kronkowski, Stanton. Also surviving are his great grandchildren Brayden and Sullivan; sisters Delores and Grace Kronkowski of Cheboygan; and sister Therese Lair of Wichita, Kansas, as well as nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Valeria; his loving wife Susan; brother Rev. Leonard Kronkowski; and sister, Francis Kronkowski.

A mass of Christian burial will be at St. Bernadette of Lourdes Catholic Church in Stanton is being planned for January 13, 2023 at 11:00 AM.
