James Hancock, age 80, of Sheridan, passed away peacefully at his son’s home in Kentwood under the loving care of his family and Spectrum Hospice on Friday, March 18, 2022.
It didn’t matter if you referred to James as Jim, Denny, or Den, one thing everyone always called him was a friend. Jim had a way about him that would light up a room; his smile and laugh were sure to make you glad he was around. Jim loved people and was very social; his family meant the world to him and he treasured every moment spent with them. His penmanship was exquisite and his ability to write just the right thing in a letter or card was impressive and inspiring. While Jim may not have always had a lot to say, when he did speak, people listened and respected his thoughts and advice. After the death of his father at an early age, Jim not only continued to be the best big brother possible, but took on a role as a surrogate dad to his siblings, something they are forever grateful for. Jim loved the arts, theater, reading a good crime and mystery novel, and playing games; especially Cribbage. Jim also proudly served his country during Vietnam as a member of the United States Air Force.
Surviving Jim is his wife of 62 years, Marilyn; daughter, Leisha(Doug) Emmorey of Comstock Park; sons, Wade (Tammy) Hancock of Kentwood, Jerry (Dawn) Hancock of Fenwick; daughter-in-law, Vicky Hancock of Papillion, Nebraska; grandchildren, Ian (Brooke) Hancock of Omaha, Nebraska, Lydia Hancock of Papillion, Nebraska, Erica (Jeff) Bode of Grand Rapids, Travis (Sydney) Hancock of Grand Rapids, Brennen Hancock of Greenville, Chelsa (Jason) Eggleston of Sheridan, Alex (Amy) Hancock of Greenville, Chris (Chelsea) Emmorey of Grand Rapids, Chad Emmorey of Grand Rapids, Calsi (Rick) Shirey of Holland; fourteen great grandchildren; sisters, Judy Gala of Garden City, Trudy (Ken) Green of Sand Creek, Jean (Rod) Springsteen of Sheridan, Mary (Tom) Eilar of White Hall; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
