Obituary for Howard Houghton

8/25/1936 – 7/30/2011
Howard J. Houghton, age 74, of Sheridan, quietly crossed home plate, at his home, on Saturday, July 30, 2011 with his family by his side.
He was born August 25, 1936, the son of Orlo and Vanchie (Van Houten) Houghton, in Milbrook Township. On May 25, 1956, Howard married the love of his life, the former Marilyn Sinclair and together they made a home and life in Sheridan, where they touched many lives in the community as he was a little league coach from 1958 to 1964 and again in the 1980’s where he had the privilege of coaching his son. He and Marilyn also organized and ran a girls softball league for 13 years and opened the community center gym for kids to play basketball for many years. During basketball, baseball and softball season, Howard was always willing to guide and share his knowledge, experiences and love of the game; he was always lending a helping hand when it came to projects that helped kids. Howard was a carpenter by trade and enjoyed seeing the many rewards of a hard days work. After building his own home, he built or rebuilt the homes of all five of his children. He was very proud of his ever expanding vegetable garden and also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father in-law, Roberta & Harold Sinclair, one brother, Dennis Houghton and one granddaughter, Katie Coe.
Surviving Howard, is his wife Marilyn, their children; Candi & Marty Huntley of Sheridan, Michelle & Gary Coe of Sheridan, Coleen & Michael Myers of Sheridan, Betsy & Milt Klingensmith of Fenwick, Mike & Amy Houghton of Sheridan, grandchildren; Casie Huntley & Bruce Milke III, Ethan Coe, Erica Coe, Rylan Myers, Mackenna Myers, Harrison Myers, Kaitlyn Klingensmith, Markey Klingensmith, Gage Shilling, Brady Spitler-Shilling, two honorary granddaughters, Annabelle & Isabelle Williams, his two sisters; Linda & Robert Gladding of Fenwick, Kate & Rich Jennings of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, his four brothers; Garth Houghton of Six Lakes, Laurine & Marilyn Houghton of Lake City, Jack & Bernice Houghton of White Cloud, Dallas & Sharon Houghton of Fenwick, a sister-in-law; Theda Houghton of Amble, two brother-in-laws; Gary & Sharon Sinclair of Jonesborough, Tennessee and Steve Sinclair of Sheridan and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are being held on Wednesday, August 3rd at the Shiloh Community Church at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, August 2nd , at the Simpson Family Funeral Home in Sheridan from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.
For those desiring to make a memorial donation in Howard’s memory, the family has established the “Howard Houghton’s Underdog Fund” which will be used to help provide support, equipment and camp scholarships for under privileged young athletes and envelopes will be available at both the funeral home and church.

Howard was a huge and positibe influence in my childhood. I played little league for him in the late 50’s and early 60’s. I still have a love of the game. I don’t think we ever lost and that’s only because he was that good of a coach. My condolances go out to Howard’s friends and family.

One of my fondest memories of playing baseball for the Sheridan All Stars was playing with Howard. He had a gun for an arm and to see him cut loose with great throws from the outfield was a memory I will always cherish. Howard had a great smile and touched the lives of so many people, he will be missed.

I am very sorry for you loss. Life is so fleeting. It seems like only yesterday that I remember playing basketball with Howard at the family reunions in the gym in Sheridan. He was a very good player. I also remember him taking me bow hunting and Grampa Orlo’s farm. Nobody warned me about his fear of snakes and I made the mistake of telling him about a garter snake slithering across the top of the grass. Before I could blink my eyes he had spun around and drew his bow to shoot the snake. He will be sorely missed!
