Obituary for Eloise DeVos

Eloise June DeVos (Vanden Broek), age 92, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2018.

Eloise was born on March 19, 1926 to parents, Cornelius and Myrtle (Welsheimer) Vanden Broek. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and deeply loyal friend. Eloise was a very social person who believed that valuable knowledge could be gained by maintaining an open mind when engaging in conversations with others. She embraced the idea that outcomes are determined by perspective; maintaining her relentlessly positive attitude and sense of humor, through her final hours.

Working in a profession primarily occupied by men at the time, Eloise took pride in her piano tuning skills and found joy in various forms of artistic expression. She spent many summers camping near the shores of Lake Michigan and loved photographing and painting the lighthouses and natural landscapes found along the shoreline.

Eloise is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bert J. DeVos; son, Larry DeVos; brothers, Casey Vanden Broek and Wesley Vanden Broek and sister Virginia Goldsmith. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Young of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Ashley DeVos of Rockford, MI; Nathan (Amanda) DeVos of Rockford, MI; Jaycee (Garrett) Fitzgerald of Phoenix, AZ and great grandchildren; Sierra Weimer-DeVos, Samantha DeVos and Kellan Fitzgerald.

In honoring Eloise’s wishes, there will be no formal ceremony and she will be laid to rest next to her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. For those wishing to make a memorial donation in celebration of Eloise’s life, the family suggests that donations be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
