7/1/1930 – 9/19/2011
Dolores (Gauthier) Halvorsen, age 81, of Sheridan, passed away on September 19, 2011 at her home. She was born on July 1, 1930, in Herron, Michigan, the daughter of Trefley & Lena (Rouleau) Prevo.
On June 3, 1950, Dolores was married to Floyd Gauthier, who passed away on September 6, 1990. Also preceding her in death was a brother, Bill Gamache.
On July 11, 1997, she was married to Eric L. Halvorsen and he survives in addition to two children, Dean & Kathy Gauthier of Novi, MI and Ann & Kevin Dean of N. Muskegon plus 9 grandchildren, a special step grandson, William Beck of California, 4 step children, 11 step grandchildren and 23 step great grandchildren.
Dolores attended St. Ann’s High School of Alpena and Alpena County Normal. She graduated from Wayne State University of Detroit with a degree in elementary education and taught school for 35 ½ years, retiring in 1986.
Formerly of Ossineke, Michigan, Dolores has been a resident of Sheridan since 1997.
Dolores became a Ladies Auxiliary member to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1974 at Auxiliary 6754, District 11 in Spruce, Michigan. There she served as Auxiliary president for 2 years and District 11 president. She is also a life member of the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent 96 of Alpena. Dolores transferred her membership of the Ladies Auxiliary to Auxiliary 5065 Sheridan, District 9 in 1997 and served as treasurer for several years.
She served as District 9 president and held several department chairmanships. Serving as president of two different districts is believed to be the first in history of the Michigan V.F.W. She received many awards including the Golden Eagle award for her dedication, commitment, loyal unselfishness and noble ideas to veterans and their families. She was a loving mother and a humble friend to everyone.
Her passion and goal in life was helping others. One of her achievements in helping disadvantaged people was when she established the Auxiliary Food Pantry at the Sheridan V.F.W. post that serves needy people in the surrounding area. Many times she assisted needy people with monetary assistance from her own personal funds. She was truly a giving person and was recently featured on Channel 17 regarding her roll in the food pantry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 22, 2011 beginning at 11:00 A.M. at St. Bernadette of Lourdes Catholic Church, Stanton, with Rev. Father Dominic Tirkey and Pastor Phil VanDop officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Sheridan.
Visitation will be held at the Simpson Family Funeral Home, Sheridan, on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. where the family will gather to meet with friends and relatives.
For those desiring to do so, the family has suggested memorial considerations to the VFW Post 5065 Ladies Auxiliary Food Pantry. There will be envelopes available at the funeral home.

Dear Eric, Dean, Ann and extended family, I want to extend our sympathy on Delores’s passing. She was truly a wonderful friend, sister-in-law, and a very giving individual. I remember the wonderful meals she prepared and the many late nights she spent preping for school after being satisfied that her housekeeping was complete. She always had time for anyone who needed her. I’m sure her reward is waiting for her in heaven. Love to all of you!! Andy and Dave

Dear Children of Dolores- I am very saddended to hear about the loss of your Mom. We grew up near each other in Herron and started school together. She was agreat friend -we attended County Normal and taught school for the same # of years. I remember your grandparents-kind and gentle people, also. Also, your Uncle Bill. In later years- your Gram baked the most wonderful homemade bread and brought it to the Senior Citizens Center. I kept in touch with your Mom through her. She certainly lived a full and great life!! I am sure you have many, many fond memories to share with each other and friends. Hopefully, we will all meet one day in heaven. Do take care and God Bless. Beverly Hayes Kihn Attwell

Dear Family of Delores, I am very sad to hear that Delores died. I served under her when she was District 13 President. She was such a wonderful person, who tried to understand everything and was the most helpful person if you had a problem. She gave 200% when she did something and she got a project done no mater how large or small it was. She also was a great friend. I will miss her. Take care and God Bless.
