Roy E. Wellman, age 64 of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019.

Roy was someone who thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors. He especially liked to go hunting and fishing, taking buggy rides on the back roads, and working with his hands as a carpenter. To many, he was known as “Trader Roy” as he absolutely loved to wheel and deal and was always in search of the next great bargain or trade. Roy was also a member of the Hubbardston American Legion SAL’s.

Surviving Roy is his wife, Janet; sons, Roy (Carin) Franks of Ionia and Roy (Jaime) Wellman of Stanton; grandchildren, Destin Franks of Portland; Kaiden Franks of Ionia; Logan Franks-Cooper of Saranac; Mason Wellman and Carley Wellman both of Stanton; brother-in-law, Gary Green of Portland and niece, Theresa Green-Densmore of Portland.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Herman & Irene (Zimmer) Wellman; sister, Sharon Green; granddaughter, Brittney Franks and grandson, Christopher Gallagher.

Visitation and funeral services for Roy are being held on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at the Simpson Family Funeral Home in Sheridan (246 S. Main Street). Visitation will be from 1-2 PM with the funeral beginning at 2 PM. Final interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

I first met Roy when I was barely 13. He worked in the kitchen at Portland High when I was in 7th grade. Introduced by a friend, Roy became a good, close friend, and we remained close through all life's good times, bad times, and changes that we both went through. He was one of my true, dear, loyal friends.
I've so many memories...
He was the only one to ever take me rabbit and squirrel hunting. We never got eitger, because he's gave us sit under a big ole tree to hunt, and the man would talk the entire day! :0) His recalling of memories of hunting trips past, of fishing trips, or some funny story of childhood antics... we didn't get see much small game, but I sure had plenty of laughs.
His laughter. I can still hear him... I never saw him mad, always good natured, funny, and he loved to pick and tease.
Every time I see or smell leeks in the store, I recall how he use to go get all wet and muddy, getting leeks for his parents when they lived in the trailor. The smell of them, and how he'd bite one, then exhale close to me, because he knew I couldn't stand the smell...then he'd bust out with his laughter.
Memories, I have a lifetime full, and I will forever treasure those.
My heart goes out to his wife Jan, another treasured lifelong friend, as well as Roys children and grandchildren. There are no words to express how very sorry I am.
He is loved by many, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
