Obituary

Elizabeth Irene Bowers went to be with the Lord on May 5, 2019 at Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids, surrounded by her family. She was born May 8, 1926 in Crystal the daughter of Clifford Shuttleworth Shoen and Leta Wave (Thompson) Shoen.

Bette, as she preferred to be known, met the love of her life at Rainbow Gardens Roller Rink, which her parents owned and operated, when Ivan had a skate problem and she helped him to the skate room for repairs. They were married on June 20, 1952 in Newport News, Virginia as Ivan was in advanced training prior to heading overseas during the Korean War.

After completing County Normal training, Bette began her career in teaching. She loved teaching in rural schools and the opportunity she had there to teach multiple grades at the same time. Most of her time teaching was spent at West End School in Crystal (of which she was also a graduate) and North LeValley School in Ionia. Away from teaching, she enjoyed family, the Detroit Tigers, and dogs, especially her special companion of many years, Suki.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ivan W. Bowers, brothers Barney and Frank Shoen, and sister Yvonne Haas. Surviving are her children, Tondra Bowers of Asheville, NC and Vance and Kaitlin Bowers of Caledonia, sisters-in-law Lorraine Shoen of Crystal and Sarah Bowers of Orleans and her "adopted" great-grandchildren, Logan Harris and Jackson Prebble.

A celebration of Bette’s life is being held on Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 1-4 PM at the Sheridan VFW Hall with a luncheon being served at 1:30. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, next to her husband, Ivan.

The family requests no flowers be sent, but memorial donations be directed to either the American Cancer Society or Arthritis Foundation.

Tondra and Vance, I am sorry for your loss. Your mother always treated me so well whenever I stayed over at your house. Your parents even let me tag along with you on a vacation one year. We used to make pizza using Bisquick for the crust. Your Dad was a saint for tolerating our giggle fests, too. I hope that you find comfort in your memories.
